What's actually inside it?
Two far-field microphones, a large full-range speaker, and a small computer that does one job: hold a conversation. When the button is pressed, what's said is turned into text, answered by a language model tuned for patience and plain speech, and spoken back in a warm voice — about a second, end to end. Waking on its name happens on the device itself, so nothing leaves the house until they've actually chosen to talk. Everything after that runs on European servers. There's no screen, no camera, no app and no account on their side, because every part of it we could take away, we did.
How does the family side work?
You get a small app; they get a walnut box. You set up the WiFi once before you wrap it, then use the app to record voice notes that land on their heart button, set reminders Roomie speaks aloud, and see a daily line telling you they're going about their day. Invite as many people as you like — brothers, sisters, grandchildren — at no extra cost. Your parent never signs into anything.
Is it listening all the time?
No. Roomie wakes when the talk button is pressed or it hears its name, and the amber ring is lit the whole time it's listening — there's never a hidden state. Nothing is recorded when it's asleep, and the metal switch on the back cuts the power completely.
What happens to what they say?
It stays in Europe, under European privacy rules, and it's used for one thing: so Roomie can hold a conversation and remember them. Never sold, never shared with advertisers, never used to train anybody's advertising. You can delete everything Roomie knows in one tap.
Is there a subscription? Be honest.
Yes. Conversation costs $4.90 a month and can be cancelled any time. If you are among the first 500, your first six months are included. We'd rather tell you now.
Does my mum or dad need a phone or WiFi?
WiFi in the house, but they never touch it — you enter it once from your phone before you give it. No smartphone, no email address, no account of any kind. A version with built-in mobile data, for homes with no internet, is coming later in 2027.
What if they're hard of hearing, or get confused?
The speaker is large for its size and tuned warm rather than thin, so it carries across a kitchen without turning shouty, and the volume is a knob they can feel. Roomie repeats itself slowly, as often as it's asked, and never corrects anyone or makes them feel caught out.
When does it ship, and can I cancel?
